An Iconic and Strategic Landmark

In 2016, Charleroi inaugurated a new fire station, marking a turning point for a city in full transformation. Located near the Hiercheuses slag heap, the station occupies a highly symbolic site, echoing the region’s industrial heritage. Its proximity to the motorway network ensures a strategic position, essential for rapid emergency response.

Symbolism and Functionality

The fire station’s architecture embodies the core values of the firefighting profession: efficiency, speed, and precision. The circular building, inspired by traffic flow systems, operates like a “speed factory,” streamlining the entry and exit of emergency vehicles. Its gear-like design reflects perpetual motion and coordinated operations. From its first floor and rooftop running track, the station offers panoramic views over the city, recalling the function of an air traffic control tower.

A Dialogue with the Hiercheuses Slag Heap

The project establishes a close connection with the nearby slag heap—an emblematic feature of Charleroi’s landscape. This visual and functional link gives the site a unique identity. From the top of the heap, the entire building can be seen; at its base, the fragmented architecture channels the movement of users and firefighters alike. The roof becomes the main façade, hosting a variety of activities while integrating the structure into both its natural and urban surroundings.

A Major Architectural Collaboration

The architectural mission was led by RESERVOIR A in collaboration with the firm Samyn and Partners. RESERVOIR A was responsible for the conceptual design, preliminary studies, and permitting phases, ensuring a coherent and ambitious vision. The firm then oversaw the detailed design and execution phases through to provisional acceptance, guaranteeing the project’s quality and compliance at every stage.

An Architecture Rooted in History and Modernity

The fire station reflects the evolution of the firefighting profession, which over centuries has come to encompass prevention, rescue, and protection. The building’s aesthetic—drawing from the forms of fire trucks and uniforms—expresses a pursuit of extreme functionality and clear visual identity. Its architectural language resonates with the symbolism of the profession, embodying urgency and safety.
