Almhotel Oberhauser

The Almhotel Oberhauser with 10 high-quality rooms was developed from the existing Oberhauserhütte on the beautiful Rodenecker/Lüsner Alm. The existing building served as the basis for the new building; the continuation of the typical local building typologies, yet with a contemporary design, and the deliberate division of the building mass into smaller volumes, create a pleasant composition of volumes. Gustav Willeit Gustav Willeit Gustav Willeit These are integrated into the landscape, taking into account the existing topology of the terrain - the house grows with the landscape or grows out of it. The gabled roof, a typical element of rural construction, is used as a landmark in the landscape and makes the ensemb... More

Manna

Originally built in the late 1920s, by the charity organisation of “Soldier’s Mother”, from whom it took its name, the Manna Sanatorium received patients of tuberculosis who hoped to heal from the benefits of living within the arcadic woods for almost a decade. Designed by Swiss architects, it stirred away from the neoclassical current of the moment in the area, and gave more specific nods to central european architecture characteristics. Even though the location was specifically selected for the ample oxygen of the altitude that would make the care and recovery of patients most efficient, the introduction of penicillin in 1938 made such institutions obsolete, forcing the abandonment of Manna, which later became a mine of... RFZ interior in the mountain

Refurbishment project of an apartment in a building from the 1970s near Campo Carlo Magno in Madonna di Campiglio Riccardo Giancola The project starts from the redefinition of the interior spaces, relocating the services and giving a new configuration to the spaces of the living area. Where the open kitchen was previously, the idea was to create a new volume in the living area, which would contain the services, the new bathroom and a kitchenette separate from the living room but which at the same time would give order and redefine the living area. The new volume is clad in larch wood with a natural finish to make the warm grain of the wood visible, marked by vertical strips of the same essence. The challenge was to rethink the classic... More

Pinzolo_a cozy house on the Brenta Dolomites

Some time ago we were called to design an apartment just purchased by a Milanese family of 4, in Pinzolo (TN), on the beautiful Brenta Dolomites. The unit was in the context of a building under construction that imposed us some structural constraints determined by the chosen construction system. The layout of the rooms - two apartments we joined on different floors - was partially determined, because some of the partitions couldn’t be moved.   Simone Furiosi As always happens, the design constraints helped us to build strong relationships between the spaces, suggesting choices that bacame the character and the identity of the project. Simone Furiosi The compressed spaces suggested dynamism, both in the relationship b... More

House K

In the far north of the Bregenzerwald lies the small community of Sulzberg on the ridge of the same-named mountain. We built a house on a steep slope in the middle of a densely built-up residential area, which makes perfect use of the limited plot of land. Due to the extreme slope, we have divided the spaces into three floors. You enter the house on the street side on the top level via a wide footbridge. Here you will find the garage, a small guest room and the spacious, open living room. Designed with maximum transparency and openness, it is only structured by the free-standing kitchen unit. The entire south front is glazed and, together with the terrace in front, celebrates the fantastic view over the Bregenzerwald to the high Vorarlberg... More

Daisen Work Hut

Daisen - Work Hut This project is the administration building for a small construction firm fromTottori, a nearby small city.  In the midst of the recent pandemic, the firm opted to relocate their office to a nearby rural area.  The new location is abundant in flora and fauna, with small scale agricultural buildings and a vista dominated by the nearby extinct volcano Mt Daisen. The firm hoped that this setting would provide an escape from the dreariness of city lockdown for themselves and their team. In the manner of a terminus or infrastructural building, the Work Hut stands alone in its context; a carpark in a village amongst rice paddies.  Like the nearby barns, the Work Hut is activated at the start of the day, with the... Botha's Halte Primary School

The project entailed the development of a new Primary School, replacing the dilapidated Botha’s Halte farm school, in the Breede River Valley, for the Bosjes Trust. Although a privately sponsored project, the school is operated by the Western Cape Education Department. The new buildings provide a state-of-the-art facility for 250 rural primary school learners from a predominantly farm worker community. The buildings have been designed around sustainability principles, while respecting the cultural heritage of the area. A didactic design approach was followed, whereby these aspects are demonstrated throughout the complex as part of the teaching and educational processes.   The “Anna Zaal” (circa 1927), the first scho... Messner Mountain Museum Firmian

The Messner Mountain Museum Firmian is located within the historic Sigmundskron Castle near Bolzano and represents a sensitive architectural intervention in a centuries-old structure. The project combines contemporary steel and glass architecture with the preserved historic fabric, creating a dialogue between past and present. Alexa Rainer Metall Ritten was responsible for the execution of complex steel and glass constructions integrated into the existing castle structure. The intervention required highly individual solutions, as no structural element was identical to another. A total of 137 custom-made steel windows, each with different dimensions, were fabricated and installed, reflecting the irregular geometry of the historic walls... More

Sapire Residence

An entrepreneur and family with a passion for health living requested a large home on their dramatically sloping 2-acre site. They specifically wanted an informal layout that could be woven into the topography of the property. Wanting to enjoy as much of the site as possible, the client requested the inclusion of steps and landscape pathways to allow for access to more distant parts of the steep site.   Situated on a promontory jutting into the canyon below, the hillside retreat boasts multiple vistas of the surrounding canyon and the Pacific Ocean beyond. Since covenants, conditions, and restrictions associated with the property allowed for only a single story above street level, many of the home’s rooms are located on a lowe... More
