Coal Harbor Apartment

RENOVATION OF A CONDO IN VANCOUVER’S COAL HARBOUR NEIGHBHOUROOD SPRING 2018This spacious apartment located in Vancouver’s Coal Harbor neighbourhood was customized to serve as a multi-generational family centre. As a gathering spot for extended family members who work and travel around the world, the flat is fitted with all the transitional conveniences of a high-end hotel, but with the welcoming atmosphere of returning home. The extended plan flows fluidly from one space to the next while carving out a variety of intimate niches. Private spaces are flexible but convey unique expressions of each family member’s respective personality. The 2,150 square-foot apartment originally felt much smaller due to a fragmented layout and jarring material... Hidden Annexe

The client sought a flat built entirely under his terrace-house garden, making the existing property more suitable for his growing family whilst retaining the garden. Within 46 m², the project required resourceful use of space, ingenious access to natural light and preferably little impact on the adjacent properties and environment. A concrete shell was inserted below ground, and a glass cube dropped into the centre, drawing in light and air and creating both a lightwell and private courtyard. Flat, walk-on roof lights were installed in the bathroom and hallway ceilings to further maximise natural light. To counter space constraints, Edgley Design established a careful, simple layout, with frameless glass and minimal details. The garden... More
