Reed Watts, in collaboration with landscape architects Colvin & Moggridge, has completed a series of improvements at the National Trust’s Ightham Mote, a Grade I listed building and Scheduled Monument in Kent, England. The project combines landscape interventions, sustainable drainage systems, and new parking with the introduction of a visitor reception and shop. The Case Study House in Wolfpassing is a renovated family home with a cross-laminated timber (CLT) extension, located just one hour from Vienna, Austria. When the original house was designed in the 1960s, the architect was likely inspired by Richard Neutra's or Ray and Charles Eames's Case Study Houses in Los Angeles. The original bungalow featured a large terrace and was in harmony with the surrounding nature. One characteristic tree was even incorporated into the terrace itself. Our approach to the design of a new library for the Cricket Club Of India has been informed by our thoughts on what a library in the information age must do. In increasingly digital times, fewer people than ever visit libraries - and those that do, don’t stay, but only come to take/ return books. As the need to physically access books diminishes, the library must be seen as a house of knowledge rather than a house of books. This means activating the space by providing for exchange of ideas between people through activities. The project brief was to renovate and extend a 1930’s semi-detached house in Clontarf. Poorly considered additions and alterations to the house resulted in a large dwelling with some odd shapes and underutilized spaces, which overheated in the summer and had poor connections to the south facing garden and views beyond. The design response was a fabric first approach which meant retaining and improving the maximum amount of existing fabric, working with the original footprint with modest reductions and additions to improve the flow of the house, increasing the floor area by only 12sq.m. Positioned at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac and overlooking the ocean at North Curl Curl, the owners purchased the home to be able to see and hear the ocean. However, the outdated house did not capitalise on the spectacular views, the flow and symmetry were awkward, with areas of dead and underutilised space.
