Chooji Restaurant

Due to the increase in capital in Tehran (the capital of Iran), most interior projects are a product of demolition of the existing buildings and their replacement with a brand new design which has caused negative impacts on the environment, during the past years. On the other hand, the considered location for this project was rented for a limited time, therefore, minimizing the negative effects of demolition through keeping the existing walls, choosing wood and iron as the materials with the potential to return to the life cycle, designing details capable of being easily assembled and disassembled with the potential to be repeated in the future branches to avoid budget and recourse waste are considered the main issues in interior... Obelia pendant light

Obelia Pendant Lights...are a collection of local artisan made spun aluminium lights with angled natural solid timber rims as their feature. With the additional bent timber arc and timber dowel, Obelia will hang cozily in all environments. Little Obelia minus the timber arc is a minimal version of Obelia. The feature of Obelia is a solid timber rim, which begins by skillfully hand joining two pieces of certified solid timber. It is then CNC cut before being hand finished and polished. It angles from one side to the other giving the light a subtle difference in appearance depending on the angle it is viewed. Black House

This four bed family house sits in the heart of the Kent countryside surrounded by mature trees and gardens.   The house encompasses a mixture of framed and linear views across four carefully sculpted gardens that aim to each capture a piece of the surrounding landscape.   Inspired by the building and land topography of Dungeness, located on the south Kent coast, this house is a collection of five modules clustered around a central courtyard. The Black House’s rectangular massing was divided into blocks by key site axes, a view from the pool to a large populus tree, and a previous path to the site. Each block is linked to a distinct aspect of the garden, with a final connecting view provided from the roof of a brick towe... More

The Crows Nest

AR Design Studio was approached by the clients who were looking to extend their holiday home on a cliff top on the South Coast. During the planning process, and following the unprecedented rainfall during the winter of 2014, there was subsidence close to the house and the decision was made to replace it entirely.   AR Design Studio was then tasked with designing a completely new home; the idea of movement and fracturing formed the backbone of the concept. Working closely with engineers Eckersley O’Callaghan, an imaginative structural solution was proposed to prevent future failure. A concrete slab was built into the ground, a series of strategically placed dwarf walls were then built on top of it. A floating structural frame wa... More

The Farmer's House

The Farmer’s House acts as the UK base for AR Design Studio’s clients, who return to the English countryside from their travels to tend to their farmstead. Set on a private estate in the most western part of the South Downs National Park, the house’s rural location is its raison d’etre. AR Design Studio were approached by the clients who were looking to add a completely self-contained yet joined annexe, that would be a space for their children and grandchildren to ‘take over’ when they were staying. The team at AR Design Studio proposed an extension and makeover that would wrap everything together in a unified and elegant form. The old and new are joined by a glazed link that sits between the existing house and the new annexe.... More

Wallan Veterinary Hospital

Wallan Veterinary Hospital in regional Victoria is an efficient and elegant building that successfully refreshes the traditional vet hospital typology. The 24-hour facility, open seven days a week, needed an immediately identifiable, strong street presence, yet still had to be respectful of its residential context.A sympathetic response to site The client’s brief called for a state-of-the-art facility that comfortably accommodates a range of programmatic requirements as well as addresses the site’s unique constraints. Crosshatch co-founders Jaime Diaz-Berrio and Mark Allan’s solution was to raise the single-level building on a recessive masonry base and set it back from the street. In doing so, they also mitigated flooding issues on a chall... More

TD Place

The towering wooden veil that surrounds the new south stands of TD Place at Lansdowne, creates an iconic image for the new stadium complex, setting it apart as a unique legacy landmark and connecting it to the surrounding natural environment of the Rideau Canal. Eric Sommer of Spring Valley translated the inspiration of architect Robert Claiborne into an intricate and precise lattice of timber and steel. The structure, which incorporates more than 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) of glue-laminated Alaskan Yellow Cedar contains more than 750,000 parts and is 154 metres wide by 25.5 metres high (505’ x 83’ 6”). 24 inverted L-shaped frames project vertically from the ground and bend more than 90° towards the field creating the structure’s com... Hanging Gardens

London-based practice Architects of Invention (AI) led by Nikoloz Japaridze has submitted a design proposal for 500 residential units in Birmingham’s Digbeth area. The practice was approached by Chinese private equity fund PGC- Capital whose The Jewel Court, 77 one-two bed luxury apartments, is already on site in Birmingham. The design concept - ‘Garden Hill’ - is inspired by The Hanging Gardens of Babylon: an oasis-like residence for Birmingham’s growing, multicultural population. The two dramatic 25-storey staggered towers, hung with gardens at every level, give all occupants and visitors access to private and shared terraces and a spacious rooftop garden. The entire block is made of CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) a... More

Meander Hospital

In Amersfoort a beautiful modern hospital has recently been build. Through the use of 5000 m² timber cladding the Meander Medical Centre now has a professional and friendly appearance. Carpenters from Foreco Timber Constructions have mounted a framework on the outer wall to apply the timber cladding of Western Red Cedar. The external cladding received a fire retardant treatment of SafeWood® Select. Unique about this treatment is that it is a maintenance free fire retardant. Since some cladding has a hight of 42 meters this was one of the requirements of timber. More
