Alex Monroe Studio

The Alex Monroe Studio, Snowsfields is a new jewellery studio, sited within a stone’s throw of The Shard in the Bermondsey Conservation Area, providing a showcase for Alex’s growing international business. Consisting of a handcrafted 3-storey addition to an existing Edwardian single-storey shop front, the building provides workshop and studio space, alongside a boutique store, with meeting and dining spaces on the upper levels as well as a roof terrace with views towards London Bridge. The new building operates as a bespoke ‘bookend’ to the original terrace, creating a strong prow that completes the street frontage. The design maintains the continuity of the shop fronts, whilst the additional floors form a separate metal clad volume t... More

The Danish Maritime Museum

Collaboration:BIG with Kossmann.dejong, Rambøll, Freddy Madsen andKiBiSi The new Danish Maritime Museum is a subterranean museum built around a dry dock adjacent to Kronborg Castle of Hamlet fame. For a century the site was a shipyard bustling with vessels and machinery, and the dry dock that now forms the centrepiece of the museum’s underground building is a legacy of this yard. Yet until recently, the dock lay in a state of neglect in a decayed post-industrial landscape, a desolate and rather ugly concrete relic of a lost industry. Due to the UNESCO World Heritage status of Kronborg Castle, the museum, formerly located within the castle’s walls, was evicted in order to restore the castle’s original interiors. It was decided that the m... More

Dune House

The house is located on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island, an hour’s drive north of Auckland. The site sits within a natural dune zone adjacent a long white sand beach. The coastline to the south borders Tawharanui Regional Park; to the north is a headland that is the start of Leigh Marine Reserve. The brief called for a second home: not a full time home but more than a holiday getaway. The response has been designed to provide for their love of the outdoor beach environment, their love of water sports & their 3 dogs: easy access to a board from the basement surf locker, outdoor wash down areas / outdoor showers and a sense of openness and connection to the dune environment and beach views. The architecture needed to be as... More

Lune de Sang Sheds

Lune de Sang is a unique inter-generational venture that will see a significant former dairying property in northern NSW transformed into a sustainably harvested forest. The vision is exceptional in that rather than planting a fast growing crop, various hardwoods of the region have been chosen to establish a rainforest landscape that will take generations to mature. The hardwoods will be tended to maturity and then selectively harvested, the long lifespan of the trees meaning a wait of between 50 and 300 years before the various species fully mature. We were captivated by this long term vision, a vision that goes beyond one’s lifetime. The design is a close collaboration with our client, one bound in collective understanding of the... More

The Chapel

The Chapel is a community space in a new urban ward on the outskirt of Hochiminh city, Vietnam. As the result of estate crisis, the surrounding area is lacking of communal centers; therefore, the Chapel is designed to be the place for people, especially the youth, to participate in activities such as conferences, weddings, exhibitions or enjoying a light coffee and snack. Located in a 10x20m land rented in 10 years, The Chapel takes advantages of materials from the owner’s previous projects such as steel frames, metal sheets... Moreover, by using steel as the main structure material, it not only makes the foundation lighter, but also helps shorten the construction period than normal, and saving cost as well. The portal frame is made by d... More

Agashiyan

This office building although not very tall, in its context will become the tallest building in the entire precinct. Situated amidst low rise development in a rapidly urbanizing city, Ahmedabad in India, the new rules for increasing the density necessitated a tall structure in a location where the earlier prevalent rules allowed a maximum height of 36 meters with a ratio of being allowed to build upto 2.5 times the plot area. The new development rules allow the buildable area to be 4 times the plot size and height controls have been increased to a maximum of 75 meters. Located at the junction of two arterial city roads, retail spaces were to be maximized at the ground level as per the client’s brief, with a provision of small offices varyin... More

Return - The storage of natural life

Human nature and our city? One man is the essence of nature. The world in which we are living is nothing more than a tangible and intangible expression of what we build. The urban residents have been in a tangled puzzle in an effort to make the world and the living environment better and better. However, the results are not always as expected. What is really happening to the cities where we are living in? Rapidly and out-of-control changes to the cities is becoming too chaotic that make people wonder themselves ‘what is the original, true look of our habitat and what is that we really want?’. A good human live is a life in accordance with nature. Sometimes it is important to understand the nature of the cities where we live rather th... More

THE PINCH

THE PINCH is a library and community center in Shuanghe Village, Yunnan Province, China. The project is part of a government led reconstruction effort after an earthquake in September 2012. The majority of village houses were destroyed, leaving the residents living in tents for up to one year. After the earthquake the government has sponsored new concrete and brick houses and a large central plaza. During the first site visit, the houses remained incomplete and the plaza was a large empty site. The University of Hong Kong decided to sponsor the design and implementation of a new library building. Located in the new but empty public plaza, it would serve to activate the community and provide a physical memorial for the event. The sit... More

The Village

The 2.0 acre plot is a part of a 100 acre development. Located on a steeply contoured site this residential project creates apartments that cascade down along the existing land slopes allowing each one to open into a series of sheltered terraces and open gardens. Each apartment feels like an individual house nestled in the hilly land. Echoing the undulating steep slopes, the houses step diagonally or frontally and merge with the terrain creating minimal intervention with the land. Built mostly in the local basalt stone available on site, the design creates a sustainable environment with minimal cutting of land, north orientation of all houses in response to the average temperatures of 35°C in the region and channeling all runoff water to wa... Art Gallery of Greater Victoria

The AGGV’s permanent collection is housed in an historic mansion and series of Modernist additions in an established residential area of Victoria. Our design team was shortlisted for a competition to envision the future renovation and expansion of the gallery. The competition brief asked that the proposal bring a “downtown” presence to the museum’s suburban location and more vibrancy on the street, all without overwhelming the site or removing the existing trees. The current facility appears impenetrable, its vibrancy hidden behind brick and concrete. Rather than simply renovating the existing additions, our submission offers a brand new structure, re-imagining the gallery as a village of small pavilions engulfed by the inspired land... More

FPT Technology Building

Vietnam is experiencing rapid development as its economy moves from a primarily agricultural to an industrialized society. FPT technical university building located just outside of Hanoi will be teaching the next generation of engineers and technicians who will play an important role in developing Vietnam’s sustainable future. It is our goal to create a green university building that counters these problems as well as instills sustainable practices to these future generations. The FPT Technology building is p... More

Skyfarm

In conjunction with the Expo Milan 2015 - Feeding the Plant, Energy for Life, Skyfarm is a concept design proposal for a vertical farm; facilitating the growth of crops in a multi-storey structure within high density areas. The farm's structure is built following the tensegrity principle, using bamboo elements to define the spacial system and deliniate its circular shape, while also allowing for maximum geometric flexibility. The open structure guarantees direct light at any level for the natural growth of crops. Rain water is collected via tank located on the rooftop and distributed down the structure by gravity. The water services each level, where the food is produced using a system of aquaponics, combining conventional aquaculture... More
