Located in Fosen, a picturesque peninsula with a stunning landscape of the Norwegian Sea in the west and Trondheimsfjord in the east, the Brekstad is an adaptive reuse of a former military bunker into a multipurpose pavilion by ASAS Arkitektur

The design program of the pavilion is versatile and can be used for hosting private or social events, lectures and site visits related to the nearby farm. An open plan allows flexibility and adaptability to various needs, giving the pavilion a dynamic character.

In contrast to its prior use of defence and protection, the floating form of the structure is used to advantage by establishing a visual connection throughout. "To see and be seen" is the core concept, expressed via a 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding nature, wildlife and airbase.

The original, bulky character of the structure is retained where the concrete texture and walls are left exposed. A transparent volume hovers over this solid base, creating a clear distinction between the old and the new. The existing bunker serves as the foundation, where the old plan is replaced by the entrance and ancillary functions like kitchen, toilettes and storage.

Steel, concrete and glass are the primary materials, with hints of wood, achieving a rich, warm atmosphere. Stairs serve as the focal point and transitional element, taking visitors on a journey from enclosed to light.

Therefore, the transformation project beautifully connects the old with the new, crafting a balanced composition that stands out architecturally and functionally.
