The bench, inspired by sailboat decks, is crafted entirely from iroko wood, chosen for its exceptional resistance to weather and salt. The supporting structure consists of a rigid frame with solid wood crossbars, ensuring stability and strength, while the seat is composed of iroko slats aligned longitudinally.
The slats, with a thickness of around 20 mm, are spaced evenly, with joints filled with black elastomeric rubber. This material, commonly used on naval decks, is chosen for its elastic and waterproof properties, which allow it to absorb the wood’s thermal expansions, preventing cracks and deformations. The rubber layer is about 5 mm thick, designed to maintain optimal flexibility without compromising the overall rigidity of the bench.
The wood finish is achieved through natural oiling, which preserves the warm color of the iroko and highlights its grain, keeping the surface water-repellent and UV-resistant. The outer edge of the bench is rounded for added comfort, while the corners are softened to echo the gentle lines of nautical furnishings.
