M/S MARITIME MUSEUM OF DENMARK In collaboration with Junckers A/S, BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) was commissioned to develop a completely new type of floor for the newly refurbished maritime museum in Elsinore. It needed to be rustic and hard-wearing – the intention was to soften the transition between the patinated dock, and the new glass and steel.
One of the most exciting things about the newly opened M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark is the fact that it has been housed in the 150-metre long, old concrete dock. The challenge for the architects from BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) was therefore to create an architectural and aesthetic link between the old dock and the new museum. And the choice of flooring was a key part of the project.
”We were looking for a rustic solution which matched the old dock’s raw and patinated concrete. At the same time, the wooden floor was a ”bridge” between the concrete, and the glass and steel which is used in the interior itself”, says David Zahle, partner at the BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group).
