Süttő limestone is a travertine-type stone quarried in the Gerecse Hills of northern Hungary, near the village of Süttő. Light in colour with a fine, homogeneous texture, it has been used in Hungarian architecture for centuries, valued for its durability, frost resistance, and ease of carving. These properties make it suitable for both traditional masonry and contemporary cladding applications.
From a sustainability perspective, Süttő limestone offers the benefits of a natural, long-lasting material with low maintenance requirements. Its durability reduces the need for replacement over time, extending the building’s life cycle. Sourced domestically, it carries a lower transportation footprint compared with imported stone, while quarry by-products can often be repurposed for aggregate or restoration works, reducing waste. As a natural material, it is also fully recyclable at end of life.
