Studio Lyon/Szot was honored to be selected through a competitive bid process to undertake the redesign and revitalization of the Lobby at 1000 Dean St. Originally serving as a Studebaker car services center, the building underwent renovations in 2006 to meet the increasing demand for office spaces in Brooklyn. Our objective was to create a more engaging and vibrant lobby environment while also maximizing the use of space by repurposing a decommissioned ramp from the former car service center.
With a deep understanding of the tenants' requirements and circulation patterns, we meticulously developed an entry sequence that offers multiple access points to the building. The redesigned lobby has transformed into a central hub, providing tenants with amenities such as secure bicycle parking, inviting meeting spaces for client interactions and team collaborations, and seamless connectivity throughout the day.
Respecting the existing character of the vaulted lobby, our design team introduced two distinct volumes. One accommodates shared conference rooms, fostering an environment conducive to productive exchanges. The other incorporates a custom-designed desk that gracefully responds to the various paths of movement within the space. These volumes are elegantly enveloped in warm wood, creating a harmonious juxtaposition with the lobby's white and painted concrete finishes. This intervention unifies the space, establishing a dialogue between the relaxed seating areas and the meticulously crafted, wood-clad elements, enhancing both functionality and visual cohesion.
