Apto 801 BCN was conceived as an introspective refuge, designed to be inhabited slowly, on the serene coast of Santa Marta. The project stems from an essential idea: to go beyond the visible and create a space that conveys calm, flow, and purpose. Inspired by the unhurried rhythm of the tropics, the apartment becomes an extension of its natural surroundings, a place to disconnect from the noise and reconnect with one’s inner time.
The design is built around three fundamental concepts: light as the main material, spatial continuity, and material warmth. Every design decision aimed to reinforce these pillars by eliminating unnecessary visual barriers and prioritizing the natural circulation of air and light. The spaces were not designed simply to be occupied, but to be felt, creating environments that evoke emotion and establish deep connections with those who inhabit them.
One of the main challenges was working within a rigid structural floor plan, limited by pre-existing fixed elements. This required a precise and strategic approach to reconfigure spatial qualities without altering the original construction system, maximizing its functional flexibility. The intervention focused on interior design as a transformative tool: reinterpreting boundaries without demolishing them, and using furniture, lighting, and finishes to enhance the overall spatial experience.
The layout was carefully organized to favor visual openness and connection between social areas while maintaining the privacy of more intimate zones. The entrance acts as a calm transition into a large open space that integrates the living room, dining area, and kitchen into a single, fluid gesture, bathed in natural light. In contrast, the bedrooms provide a quiet, introspective atmosphere with controlled openings that filter light without sacrificing spaciousness.
The material palette was defined by neutral, coastal tones, chosen to reflect light and evoke a lasting sense of freshness. Soft-toned wood brings warmth and grounding, while beige and off-whites enhance brightness and spatial clarity. Green accents, introduced through textiles, furniture, and vegetation, create a subtle dialogue with the surrounding landscape without disturbing the space’s overall serenity.
In Apto 801 BCN, architecture doesn’t impose, it accompanies. The result is a space that not only responds to its context but interprets it with sensitivity. A project that doesn’t aim to be a showpiece, but rather a vital, harmonious, and essential experience.
