Auditorium Parco della Musica Rome

Auditorium Parco della Musica Rome

Renzo Piano asked Capoferri to build the bespoke bronze doors for the new Auditorium in Rome, the Auditorium Parco della Musica. 120 doors were to be crafted. They were to match the overall aesthetics of his project and reflect artisan craftsmanship and elegance, through design, execution, and finish. Rather than opting for commercial, extruded profiles from “architectural bronze”, the architect desired the authentic patina of real bronze, a non-directional finish and the absence of visible mechanical joints. Capoferri thus built the doors from sheets of true bronze. All joints were carefully re-welded and refinished with expertise, using agents that would give a rich, nuanced texture to the surface, resulting in a finish with distinct vibrancy and depth. A special mechanism was developed to allow the insertion of insulated glass units into the door frame rather than using visible glazing stops on the profile. The antipanic pushbars where all refinished at Capoferri and clad with bronze to perfectly match the doors.
