I renovated the Kyoto Machiya in Muromachi, Kyoto that was about 80 years old and rebuilt as the Japanese restaurant "AWOMB". Most of the inside space was dismantled while retaining the main structure of the Kyoto Machiya, and the plan was changed from a house to a store.

I made the new part as simple as possible. The large white inorganic walls and ceilings crossed the space greatly, and the sections defined by the pillars were opened and reconstructed into a free and flexible modern space.

On the other hand, the original shapes of Kyoto Machiya, such as the façade, exposed columns and beams, and earthen walls, have been preserved. The historic part of Kyoto Machiya is wild and sturdy, while at the same time having a simple and warm impression.

The contrast between old and new is fused to create a comfortable eating and drinking space. "Enjoy cooking with a relaxed feeling, like a foetation wrapped in the warmth of the mother's womb." I expressed such an AWOMB concept as a space design.
