Calu Apartment

Esquadra Arquitetos as Architects

Spending a lot of time at home became the premise of Apartamento Calu, designed to accommodate the needs that arose throughout the pandemic. With a floor plan of 135m², the project is home to a family of four members. The perception that the confinement of the pandemic would not be brief determined a program adapted from the many months of remote work and school.

The original floor was maintained, one of the clients' wishes, since the new building, in the Noroeste neighborhood, had recently been delivered by the construction company. Bathroom countertops and floors were also maintained, but complemented by architectural and decoration choices that optimize and ennoble the original spaces.

The proposal to integrate one of the suites into the social area was intended to create an environment with greater flexibility of use: a room that is, at the same time, an office, a TV room and that receives occasional guests. The sliding doors and the large slatted panel that hides the bathroom of the old suite were the resources adopted to enable different uses of the space. The dining room gained spaciousness and, through the window, much more light and ventilation.

The apartment's slatted panel extends from the dining room to the TV room, which also serves as an office. Originally as a suite, the multipurpose space can also function as a guest room, always focusing on providing the largest living area possible.

The kitchen design followed the same lines as the other rooms, using only the floor. We chose to bring green to the new proposal, and the clients' desire to have an inviting kitchen, as it would need to be integrated with the dining room.

In the rooms at Apartamento Calu, a common request: beds with iron headboards, but different room styles, focused on the characteristics and desires of each person. Distance learning, a reality in 2020, turned the project towards elements that provide greater well-being during the many hours spent at home. Therefore, in the teenage sisters' room, the study benches gained prominence in the composition of the environment, after all, the need to spend more time at home called for comfort and reinforced attention to detail.
