Overlooking Port Phillip Bay and Albert Park, Canopy HQ serves as both workplace and expression of the business itself. Designed and delivered by Canopy Fitouts, the project reflects the evolving identity of the company while providing a setting that supports the way its people work, collaborate and create. Conceived as a highly connected environment, the workplace prioritises openness, visibility and interaction, creating a spatial framework that encourages the natural exchange of ideas across the practice.
Responding to the limitations of the company's previous office, the project was shaped by a desire to create a more connected and adaptable workplace. Rather than relying on enclosed offices and traditional workplace hierarchies, the floorplate is intentionally open, allowing people and disciplines to remain visually connected throughout the day. Workspaces, meeting environments and collaborative settings are woven together within a cohesive framework that supports both focused work and informal exchange.
A defining characteristic of the workplace is its relationship to light and landscape. Expansive glazing frames uninterrupted views across the bay and surrounding parklands, while carefully considered planning allows natural light to penetrate deep into the floorplate. This connection to the broader setting becomes an integral part of the workplace experience, lending a sense of openness that extends beyond the physical boundaries of the tenancy.
Materiality plays a central role in shaping the experience of the workplace, used as a device to establish atmosphere, define character and distinguish key environments across the floorplate. Rather than being applied as a finish, natural stone informs and influences much of the project's design language, guiding material selections and helping to shape the identity of individual spaces while maintaining a cohesive architectural narrative throughout. Variations in tone, texture and scale create moments of contrast and richness, allowing each setting to possess its own distinct character without losing connection to the broader workplace.
Within the kitchen, expressive green marble establishes a bold and sculptural focal point. Extending across the island and splashback, the stone introduces depth and movement while reinforcing the space as a natural place of gathering. The sweeping form of the 12-person island further amplifies this role, creating a social centre that anchors everyday interaction within the workplace.
A more restrained expression emerges within the boardroom, where travertine introduces a sense of permanence and clarity through a monolithic table and matching credenza. The quiet refinement of the stone is complemented by the curved geometry of the room, creating a setting that feels both composed and purposeful. Within the design library, Cherry Blossom stone introduces a softer and more nuanced character, its subtle tonal variation bringing warmth and texture to a space dedicated to exploration, discussion and material discovery. Together, these distinct stone selections establish individual identities across the workplace, using materiality as a means of defining atmosphere and shaping the experience of each environment.
Together, these material interventions act as spatial markers throughout the workplace. Rather than relying on walls or enclosure to define experience, the project uses materiality to create differentiation and identity, establishing a layered rhythm that guides movement and occupation across the floorplate. Stone becomes more than a surface treatment, acting as a framework through which atmosphere, character and connection are expressed throughout Canopy HQ.
Throughout the workplace, spaces have been designed to support the full spectrum of the business's activities, from focused project work and client presentations through to material selection and collaborative workshops. The design library plays an important role within this ecosystem, providing a curated destination for exploration, discussion and creative exchange while reinforcing the hands-on culture that underpins the practice.
Technical requirements have been carefully integrated within the broader architectural response. Acoustic treatments, collaborative environments and meeting spaces are resolved as part of the overall design language, allowing performance and functionality to support the workplace experience without defining it. The result is an environment that feels open and adaptable, while remaining responsive to the practical demands of a growing business.
Canopy HQ ultimately reflects a workplace designed from within. Shaped by the people who occupy it each day, the project brings together design, collaboration and client engagement within a singular environment that expresses the culture, ambition and evolution of the business it was created to support.
