Casa Balselhas

Guillaume Jean Architect&Designer as Architects

'A simple house, a shelter, memories, remodeling' were the client's wishes. The house already existed in which it was visible the abandonment, the marks of time, its defects and its transformations over the years.

It was a modest and very small house, where a farmer's family lived happily. The house was built by himself, as was done in the past, with the finest materials of architecture such as stone and wood. The house was surrounded by a threshing floor, trees in the yard where children could play. Family members left the nest as determined by the law of life, the farmer was gone and the house remained lonely, fighting against time.

'Returning home' was the client's wish. Rebuilding the house's experiences was the challenge.

For him as a child, the house seemed big, today it looks small. How to enlarge the house without losing its identity? How to care for the old age of the house and its valences?

Joining the existing shack to the house was the solution. The oak wood roof was rebuilt with old wood, the same feature used in the old construction by the farmer. The oak wood floorboards have been completely replaced. Similar to the old granary, there is the WC in the master bedroom, with its wooden slats in oak on the facade. Finally, the house became a shelter, where the woods once again created the harmony and warm comfort for the winter days. The roof rose again to be a space actor. The house returned to shelter, a new love, a new family and the grown girl returned to the old house where she was born.
