BRBR House

The house is located in the southern part of the city of Córdoba, Argentina, on a spacious, flat plot. It was conceived as a single-storey dwelling arranged around a sort of open Roman ‘atrium’, where all the social spaces of the house converge. The building forms a ‘U’ shape, interrupted at its base by a metal-framed covered terrace that breaks the house down into three well-defined blocks. The first of these, the base, forms the social area of the dwelling, with its main living spaces completely open yet screened from the street; the second comprises the private areas of the house, where only the study engages with the courtyard whilst simultaneously serving as a walkthrough to the bedrooms; and the third is the quincho (barbecue pavilion), the space for weekend gatherings with guests.

A fourth element was designed to frame the central void: the swimming pool, located at the far southern end. From the outside, the house appears very extroverted yet unpretentious, featuring simple lines and volumes accentuated only at the entrance through the detailing. Experientially, however, it is introverted; the idea is to converge upon an open, pared-back, communal space where the void itself takes centre stage.

The interior spaces, which are closely interrelated spatially, flow seamlessly as one moves through them. The circulation throughout the house accompanies and reinforces the concept of the central space, wrapping around it at all times and resolving itself in a natural, effortless manner.

The material palette reinforces the interplay of solid and void: the large black aluminium windows, weathered metal sunshades, and exposed metal profiles contrast with the concrete walls and appear to carve into the masonry, which is finished in shades of grey acrylic render.
