Casa GF is a single-family home located in Frutillar, in Chile’s Los Lagos Region. It sits at the highest point of the development, allowing for privileged views over Lake Llanquihue and the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes. From this condition, the project is conceived with a clear intention to enhance the relationship with these natural landmarks, while also making use of solar exposure to improve its energy performance.
The house is arranged over two levels, totalling 288 m², based on a cruciform plan made up of two offset volumes connected by a large shared space contained within a central vaulted structure. This displacement makes it possible to accommodate service areas such as access points, parking and plant rooms. At the heart of the project, the vault brings together the barbecue area, living room, dining room and kitchen in a continuous sequence, all oriented towards the landscape. This openness is reinforced by a double-height curtain wall, which clears the views and turns the space into a sheltered lookout.
As part of the energy-efficiency strategy, both the shared spaces and bedrooms were positioned in relation to the sun’s path, with the aim of maximising natural light and strengthening the connection between الداخل and exterior. Openings are placed strategically to frame the landscape and enrich the spatial experience from within.
Materiality is also central to the proposal. The entire envelope is clad in reclaimed alerce shingles, complemented by reddish zinc roofing, native timber and sliding gates at the entrances. This palette seeks to reinterpret the area’s rural architectural tradition, drawing on references from barns, stables and historic country houses. The symmetry across all façades brings a sense of balance and visual control to the house from every orientation. Structurally, the dwelling rests on a concrete slab raised above the natural ground level, supporting a timber-framed construction with localised steel reinforcement at the cantilevers.
