Located along the Bay of Bengal in Mahabalipuram, Charnoc – A Coastal Retreat extends an existing hotel with a collection of contemporary guest accommodations shaped by the coastal landscape. With access from the East Coast Road on one side and direct connectivity to the beach on the other.
The master plan is organized around a central recreational spine comprising a lounge, swimming pool, and outdoor deck, which serves as the social core of the retreat. Five clusters of four independent guest pods are arranged in a linear zigzag formation, balancing privacy, natural ventilation, daylight, and landscape views. This arrangement balances the collective experience of the shared recreational areas with the privacy of individual guest accommodations.
Each pod includes a bedroom, kitchenette, washroom, and private balconies, with rear balconies featuring spa tubs overlooking the landscape.
Native planting, organically laid Charnockite stone pathways, landscaped courts, and water features define movement across the site while maintaining visual openness. The pods employ a lightweight steel framing system (LGSF) with timber cladding, while locally sourced Charnockite stone establishes material continuity throughout the development while grounding the project in its regional context.
Through the integration of architecture, landscape, and prefabricated construction, the retreat balances shared hospitality spaces with private accommodation in a contemporary coastal setting.
