The Project is located in the heart of Columbus Circle, New York City. The apartment oversees Central Park on the East and Hudson river on the Westside.
The project’s goal was to open up the apartment by expanding the sightlines as you step inside the apartment and, in doing so, capturing a crisp unobstructed view to the Central Park and the Hudson River. This was accomplished by enlarging the hallway, removing the walls surrounding the kitchen and integrating it back into the apartment while maintaining the look and feel of a distinct volume from the rest of the space. In order to achieve an open but distinct focal point, the suggested boundary of the kitchen is articulated by a white rectangular soffit set in front of the deep rich blue backdrop of the adjacent walls. Apartment’s original wood floors were replaced with large heated marble slab panels, providing a feeling of comfort and permanence as well as creating a lighter platform to highlight movement throughout the apartment.
The client’s interest in aquatic references of flora and fauna, was reinterpreted by the design team through subtle references. The discrete symbolic undertones of the finish, colors of the walls, and the floor is accentuated by the explicit graphic references within murals created over columns.
