Competition project to restore the aragonese castle on ischia island

Competition project to restore the aragonese castle on ischia island

emilio patalocchi as Architects

This is a project for the refurbishment of an old castle in the isle of Ischia (near Naples).

The project proposal is inspired by the basic idea to provide a completely reversible intervention and spaces with maximum flexibility. This was in order to make the Cathedral open to different uses ( artistic and cultural): exhibition space, music room, conference hall, space for theater performances, etc..

Inserted in historical space, it’s an ultra-modern housing, supported by a metal structure in lattice-membering, a kind of box that defines the main courtroom with semi-matt closures, mirrored outside, and a package of translucent materials on top (such as an insulated window, with solar control, type SAINT GOBAIN BIOCLEAN at the center of the area and the extrados of the dome, and a paneling type DEKODUR TOPLUX or similar at the soffit).

This double upper leather helps making the roof structure evanescent and, at the same time, it allows natural light to filter inside the Cathedral, evoking the same suggestions of the current conformation space.

The presence of opening slits in the upper part of the outer casing, and on the front, allows a modulation of the air flows within the structure.
