Located within Coppermaker Square, a build-to-rent residential development in Stratford, London, Conductor reinterprets the contemporary workplace as a restorative environment within a dense urban context. Designed by Studio Multi for International Workplace Group (IWG), the flexible workspace accommodates private offices, meeting rooms, collaborative areas, touchdown spaces, and a café within a setting that prioritises wellbeing, adaptability, and long-term usability.
Drawing inspiration from palm courts, Moorish architecture, Bedouin camps, and the grand hotels of the early twentieth century, the project creates an atmosphere that encourages both focused work and informal social interaction.
Biophilic design and spatial wellbeing
The design centres around the building's double-height atrium, which functions as the social and environmental heart of the workspace. Rather than treating the atrium as a circulation space, it becomes a planted indoor landscape that introduces daylight, vegetation, and visual openness into the interior. This biophilic approach supports occupant wellbeing while creating a calmer microenvironment within the surrounding urban setting. Generous planting, natural materials, and carefully framed views reinforce the perception of the workspace as an oasis, providing relief from the intensity of the adjacent commercial district.
Flexible planning for evolving workplaces
Conductor is organised to accommodate a broad range of working patterns within a single spatial framework. Permanent offices, meeting rooms, shared work areas, and hospitality spaces are integrated through an open planning strategy that supports both individual concentration and collaborative activity.
The adaptability of the layout extends the functional lifespan of the workspace, allowing it to respond to changing tenant requirements without extensive renovation or structural intervention. This flexibility contributes to long-term sustainability by reducing future material consumption and operational disruption.
Durable materials and environmental quality
The project employs a restrained palette of robust materials selected for longevity, ease of maintenance, and everyday performance. Timber finishes introduce warmth throughout the interior, while ceramic surfaces provide hard-wearing finishes suited to high-traffic commercial environments. Large glazed openings maximise natural daylight within the atrium and surrounding workspaces, reducing dependence on artificial lighting during occupied hours.
