10th St Residence is a remodel addition to an existing 4,402 s.f. house that was originallyconstructed in contemporary Santa Fe Style with purple and yellow stucco. The clients came tous wanting to add a clean modern glass box for the 2nd floor master bedroom, better connectionto the outdoors, and blur the line between formal and informal spaces.
We proposed to create an inverted oasis borrowing from the Japanese concept of Tokonoma. We created a series of view spaces to anchor each major room. Rather than simply opening upthe rooms to the exterior, we introduced the concept of internal landscape. We achieved thisby framing a flowering tree in a neighbor’s yard, by setting a green foreground on a roof deck tothe city view, and by creating an indoor green wall sculpture that anchors your entrance into themaster suite.
