A climate-responsive residence designed for long-term flexibility

Coop.M is organised around the idea of openness: spatially, environmentally, and socially. Rather than separating rooms through rigid enclosure, Note Architects use exposed structural elements, movable partitions, and layered thresholds to create a living environment that remains adaptable over time.

The architecture prioritises airflow, flexibility, and connection between spaces, allowing the residence to respond to both climate and evolving family needs. A central design approach involved stripping back the beam finishes to expose the concrete structure beneath. This reveals the geometry of the building while reinforcing a direct relationship between architecture and landscape. The exposed beams establish a continuous framework through the house, shaping circulation, ventilation, and visual openness.

Passive airflow and environmental continuity

The spatial organisation supports natural ventilation by maintaining open connections between the eastern and western sides of the house. Airflow from a nearby river moves through gaps between beams and walls, helping to reduce reliance on mechanical cooling and improve indoor environmental comfort. Rather than isolating rooms completely, the project creates a sequence of interconnected spaces where air, light, and views circulate. This permeability contributes to a more temperate interior environment while strengthening the relationship between indoor living and the surrounding landscape.

Flexible living through movable partitions

Adaptability is a defining aspect of the project. Sliding partitions constructed from rattan-clad panels, perforated boards, lauan walls, and timber doors allow rooms to expand, contract, or connect depending on changing patterns of use. Positioned along continuous lintels beneath the exposed beams, these movable elements allow the house to evolve as family needs shift over time. This flexibility extends the lifespan of the building by reducing the need for future renovation or reconstruction. Rooms formed between the structural beams develop distinct identities while remaining connected to the broader living environment.

Human-scaled interiors and material restraint

The material palette emphasises simplicity, tactility, and lightness. Natural materials such as timber, woven rattan, and exposed concrete create a restrained architectural atmosphere that foregrounds texture and craftsmanship rather than ornamentation. Key domestic functions, including the kitchen and built-in seating areas, are positioned below the beam line to maintain a more intimate human scale within the otherwise open plan. This contrast between structural openness and smaller-scale domestic zones helps balance communal interaction with comfort and privacy.
