D&MF Residence

A new single-family residence, for a young family with an extensive art collection, on a rolling, heavily wooded lot in suburban St. Louis. The new house was located against the building setback line on the high point of the site to take advantage of the views of the site down the hill, replacing an older home that had been located in the center of the site.

The house was designed in an ‘H’ shape, with a single story bar parallel to the private access road that contains the garage, support spaces and a guest suite/study, a parallel two story bar that contains the Master Suite and Children’s Bedrooms above, with an all glass main living area held between the two wings. Outdoor living spaces are located on either side of the main living space, screened from the road by the massing of the building. The house is screened from the road by a heavily planted berm to the north.

Type of construction (materials and systems):

Exterior: Natural limestone veneer, tropical hard wood rain screen system and decks, commercial aluminum windows, aluminum trim.

Interior: Hickory flooring, custom built cabinetry and interior doors in pre-stained Koto veneer. Building envelope was sealed with high density spray foam in all walls and roof structures. Five high efficiency mechanical systems were installed to allow the house to be comfortably zoned.
