El Greco Hotel is located in the western part of the old town of Chania, in the historic district of Topanas, with its main facade on Theotokopoulou Street.

This is a three-storey building with a basement and roof garden, with an area of ​​617,20 sq.m.In total, our study concerned the complete renovation and reconfiguration - interior and exterior - of the hotel which is developed on 5 levels and includes 17 rooms (double, triple and quadruple), reception area and restaurant.

The clear influence of the Cretan painter El Greco on the aesthetics and the central idea of ​​the hotel design, has largely determined the final result. The main goal was to recreate the quirky and evocative atmosphere of El Greco paintings with art-inspired interior spaces. Each room is designed based on a specific painting of El Greco and is characterized by a dominant color, which is discreetly reflected on elements of the furniture, such as the color of the headboard, the mirror, etc.

The central pattern of the hotel, which is used in interior and exterior decorative elements (hanger, divider) but also in furniture details (sofa, headboard, closets) is inspired by the structure of the canvas whose yarns created rhombic shapes, type mantelillo, which was widely used in Venetian painting, and especially in El Greco paintings.

In terms of design philosophy, the hotel used semicircular elements, which are reminiscent of the frames used by El Greco. Reinforcing the central concept, the headboard of each room has been made with a special wood panel reminiscent of the painter's brushstrokes.

The main elements of El Greco's work, the intense shadows and wrinkled edges, were deconstructed and used in the design approach of the hotel and are especially evident in the reception area, with decorative elements such as the ceiling frame of the roof and the choice of lighting fixtures.

The movement of visitors to the floors of the hotel was approached based on these elements, using the wooden partitions around the main staircase, creating a unique experience in the movement and the transition from public to private areas. The movement is terminated with the view of the sea as the visitor leads to the roof of the hotel.
