The project involved the second floor of the Fameccanica office building and set out to optimise the space, study and test out an efficient concept layout, develop a new interior design and redesign/construct-from-scratch all the plants and systems (mechanical, electrical, energy).The project focuses on opening up the interiors through an authentic ‘coring’ operation, which, near the large old skylights (which created problematic zones in terms of heat and vision), created three central patios shaping the layout both visually and functionally. Protected by roofs fitted with adjustable filters to control the inflow of light and air circulation, the new patios are islands of greenery serving relaxation purposes break up the workplace and bring it directly into contact with nature.
Space planning
This operation is designed to create a more elaborate spatial layout. Divided into well-defined but interconnected functional strips, the offices begin with the Clients Area at the entrance overlooking the first patio, which includes the boardroom, reconfigurable meeting rooms and a break area. 70% of the large open-space work area is allocated for business areas and 30% for ancillary facilities. Virtual rooms, different-sized meeting rooms, a smart working room, photocopying area, phone booths, coffee corner, storage space, archive and other technical areas are carefully distributed around the space, while a large central ancillary Hub creates a link between the second and third patios. There are only a few enclosed offices (just 6 for executives), all the other workstations are open plan, some (just over 10% of the total) arearranged clusters for ‘hot sharing’ and 15 are private offices for department managers: together serving a total of approximately 230 people.
Interior design
The same attention to well-being that guided the architectural project also dictates the interior design. The basic concept evokes our five senses associating them with the space’s various areas: so touch inspires the Client Area to convey a palpable sense of welcoming warmth and reception; the brightly-lit, open and flexible work areas are associated with sight; hearing informs the enclosed areas whose acoustics are ideal for operations requiring greater privacy and concentration, even of an informal nature; the Central Hub is connected with taste and is focused on free congregation, brainstormingand social breaks; lastly, the patios pay tribute to our sense of smell through the scents given off by its vegetation, creating a lounge-type atmosphere.
Forms, materials, colours and finishes enhance the conceptual variations in the various areas: the soft outlines and transparent curves of the structures in the Client Area calmly welcome people; the floors in the work areas, whose design blurs the boundaries between the circulation areas (grey carpet) and workstations (wooden-looking PVC), create a variety of visual perspectives; the choice and position of the materials createsd istinctive spaces so that the double ceilings (plasterboard, bandraster, metalplanks), walls (white plaster, windows covered with privacy film) and enclosed rooms (soundproof panels etc.) all look different. This creates a brightly-lit settingwith a predominantly white colour scheme combined with natural shades of clearwood enhanced by the green hues of the interior landscaping and flashes of different colours in synch with the firm’s corporate identity.
