Representing the state-of-the-art in laboratory design, unique applications of technical and planning solutions maximize laboratory flexibility and facilitate efficiency of operation. On a wooded research park site, the site orientation augments the site's natural characteristics and minimizes disruption of existing landscape features. The facility includes first class forensic chemistry testing laboratories, administrative and lab technician office space, lab support and employee amenities, and secured underground parking.
The design addresses highly specific programmatic and technical requirements, while providing flexibility for future lab modification and expansion. A common circulation spine connects lab modules with the administrative office zone. The day lit, double-height spine is the organizing link between lab blocks and combines user circulation with accessible overhead distribution of main utility feeds to the labs. Throughout the facility, a network of communication is provided for formal and informal meeting spaces, since the best resource for a researcher is another researcher.
The exterior design expression and form clearly reflects the internal organization and external mission of the facility. A thoughtful material palette features architectural pre-cast concrete, high-performance glazing, and metal panels. Deft composition of expressed volumes, welcoming canopies, and horizontal expression engages the building with landscape. The integrated approach to architectural and technical considerations provides the highest quality labs, enhanced workplace environments, user safety, systems flexibility and energy conservation. Combined, the technical and planning solutions represent the state-of-the-art in laboratory design.
