Strategic Workplace Design Through Partnership

Building on a successful history of multiple workplace projects, including the acclaimed EFM Logistics office, Amicus was once again entrusted by FMH Group to create their new Moorabbin headquarters in Melbourne. This ongoing partnership, founded on mutual trust and deep operational understanding, has evolved beyond traditional client-consultant relationships into a collaborative design alliance that consistently delivers spaces aligned with FMH Group's core values of efficiency, care, and collaboration.

The Moorabbin project represented an opportunity to reimagine the logistics provider's workplace typology with contemporary design sensibilities while preserving the cultural DNA that defines their organisational identity. The design brief called for a sophisticated balance: maintaining operational functionality and spatial flexibility while creating an environment that actively promotes collaboration, enhances productivity, and authentically reflects FMH Group's distinctive working culture.

Leveraging extensive knowledge of FMH Group's operational requirements and workplace dynamics, Amicus approached this project with the strategic advantage of understanding not just what the client needed, but how they work, communicate, and evolve as an organisation.

Design Response & Execution
Integrated Design-Build Methodology - The project exemplified Amicus's holistic approach, with Design and Delivery teams working in seamless coordination to maximise the unique architectural opportunities presented by the base building. This integrated methodology ensured that design vision translated effectively into built reality, with construction feasibility informing design decisions from project inception.

Architectural Opportunity & Challenge - The building's most defining characteristic—dramatically high exposed ceilings combined with exceptional natural light penetration—presented both extraordinary opportunity and complex design challenges. Rather than viewing the soaring ceiling heights as limitations requiring mitigation, the design team embraced these architectural features as catalysts for spatial drama and workplace differentiation.

The abundance of natural light, channeled through the expansive ceiling void, creates an almost outdoor atmosphere within the workspace. This environmental quality energises the working environment while reducing dependence on artificial lighting, contributing to both user wellbeing and operational sustainability.

Strategic Spatial Hierarchy - The ceiling height variations were strategically leveraged to create a sophisticated spatial sequence that guides the user experience. Front-of-house client areas capitalise on the full ceiling height to deliver scale and visual impact rarely achievable in conventional commercial tenancies. These dramatic meeting spaces serve as powerful brand statements while providing functional advantages for client presentations and collaborative sessions.

Biophilic design elements integrated throughout these spaces reinforce the connection to natural environments, while bespoke acoustic ceiling treatments in the boardroom balance the dramatic scale with acoustic performance essential for effective communication. These installations demonstrate how technical requirements can become design features that enhance rather than compromise the architectural vision.

Architectural Integration & Flow
Moving deeper into the workplace, wall heights were strategically calibrated to establish a clear datum line that responds directly to the building's structural rhythm. This architectural gesture grounds the fitout within its host building, creating visual continuity that reinforces spatial flow while providing clear wayfinding cues.

The transition from intimate reception spaces to expansive work areas creates a carefully orchestrated user journey. Visitors experience an intentional sequence from the focused scale of arrival areas to the inspiring volume of collaborative spaces, reinforcing FMH Group's brand positioning while supporting functional requirements.

Workplace Zoning Strategy
The spatial planning recognises the diverse operational requirements of contemporary logistics operations. Open work areas provide flexibility for evolving team structures, while dedicated collaborative zones support the cross-functional coordination essential to logistics operations. Client-facing areas are strategically positioned to create impressive presentation environments that reinforce FMH Group's professional capabilities and attention to detail.

Project Impact & Outcomes
The completed Moorabbin office successfully translates FMH Group's operational values—efficiency and care—into spatial reality. The workplace optimises operational workflow while demonstrating the thoughtful design approach that reflects the company's commitment to excellence in client service.

Functionality and aesthetics integrate seamlessly, creating an environment that supports both day-to-day operational efficiency and the dynamic collaborative processes that drive innovation in logistics services. The variety of spatial offerings—from focused work areas to impressive client presentation spaces—provides FMH Group with the flexibility to adapt to changing business requirements while maintaining the design integrity that reinforces their brand values.

The project demonstrates how deep client relationships enable design solutions that transcend conventional workplace design. By understanding not just functional requirements but organisational culture and values, Amicus delivered an environment that enhances FMH Group's operational capabilities while creating a workplace that employees are proud to occupy and clients remember.

The success of this collaboration reinforces the value of long-term design partnerships, where accumulated knowledge and trust enable increasingly sophisticated and tailored design responses that support both immediate functional requirements and long-term strategic objectives.
