This is a renovation and extension project of a house. The owner wants to have rooms for their children by covering the void within. The design theme was to make a contrast by creating new bookshelves to hold lots of books within the old wood structure.

We designed bookshelves by which child's rooms and study rooms are divided. The old wood structure being left as it is, the collision between the old and new stimulates the spaces.

Taking advantage of the old wood structures is the biggest issue of this project. To use the best of the spaces, breaking the parts of the old structures and building new wood structures into it is the solution.

Considering feelings of the old materials and the inheritance of the history of this house, we leave the old woods as it is. Although it is true that the structures are on the way of the new spaces and bookshelves, the intention is to design the collision between the old and new, and make them factors of the design.

To make the differences between the old and new structures clear, there are no doors in child rooms. No walls between child rooms and study rooms, there are only the bookshelves and the old wood structures. Entering the hole dug in the bookshelves, there is also a bookshelf whose form is the same one of cut volume. New relationship between books and humans came into being.

They would live as if being surrounded by many books.
