This impressive Grade-I listed building, marred by previous poor construction techniques and in need of refurbishment, was restored to its former splendour, and the building’s services upgraded, making it fit for the requirements of 21st Century working life as a diplomatic hub.
All ceilings were replaced, as unsafe heavy plaster and metal-lath were at risk of falling. Decorative cornices and mouldings were replaced and parquet floors renovated. Trench heaters replaced ceiling heating panels, and M&E infrastructure includes new LED lighting, AV and data. A new colour scheme was developed, including gold leaf to decorative cornices and the grand stair.
This project had diverse themes and requirements, needing a team consisting of experts. Together the team of consultants have experience of historic buildings, diplomatic properties, and government clients.
Differences in approach between the diplomatic world and the construction industry, and cultural differences between teams from Germany and from Great Britain, meant that the architect and project manager, ÜberRaum Architects, were essential to bridge these worlds, communicate, and allow everyone to work together.
