Glamping Ursa Major

ss.mm design as Architects

Glamping

The way we travel has changed. We no longer want a generic, one-size-fits-all vacation. We want to explore on our terms and immerse ourselves in local culture, and we no longer just want to simply witness nature—we want to live in it. A fusion of glamour and camping, glamping is a way to authentically experience the untamed and completely unique parts of the world—without having to sacrifice creature comforts. It is where stunning nature meets modern luxury.

Ursa Major

The Larger Bear is the third larger constellation and largest constellation in the northern sky. Its brightest stars form the Big Dipper asterism, one of the most recognizable shapes in the sky. Well known by most cultures in the world, it was discovered by Greek Astronomer Ptolemy in the 2nd century AD in Greek Mythology. Ursa Major is associated with Callisto, a numph who was turned into a bear by Zeus’s jealous wife Hera. Zeus fell in love with Callisto, and together they had a son Arkas, even though she had sworn a vow of chastity. Arkadia, a region in the Peloponnese, is named after him.

Concept

Our site is located in the heart of the Peloponnese in Greece, not too far away from where Arkas was born. Overwhelmed by the breathtaking beauty of the untouched natural landscape, we close our eyes and imagine how it would feel to lay down at night, resting after a long day’s activities, lighting a fire, singing songs and looking at the starlit sky. The idea of the reflected constellation was born. Ursa is the reflection of the sky onto the land, that leaves its traces as it attempts to form and place its elements on the ground. Myth and reality, sky and earth all become one, united by the many forces of land, history, and science. The main design elements (landscaping routes, water facilities, common activities’ spaces) surround the main concept to reinforce the idea.

Description

This hospitality project consists of ten tents (geodesic domes) around 18-25 sq. m. each. They surround a pool-like lake. A common utility space used for events and, or for serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner is located on the upper part of the site and will also be accessible by travelers that do not necessarily stay overnight. Open theaters, areas of outdoor activities and open whirlpool baths will complement the glamorous experience.

Each tent is placed on a wooden platform overlooking either the mountain or the lake below and contains a double bed opposite or nearby a fireplace, a fully equipped bathroom and a small kitchenette. Round windows aim to the sky and complete the immersive experience of living in nature.  Each dome features its own private balcony with pergolas and seating areas to hung out. The larger domes (25 sq.m.) are also equipped with a mezzanine level so larger families can be hosted as well.
