Situated in a 1950s-era, single-story building on Main Street in downtown Edmonds, Leftcraft is casual and approachable, yet distinct from local restaurant and bar establishments. Rich materiality and an embrace of time-worn patina set the venue apart from other establishments in town. The latest in a series of restaurants developed by the same owner, Leftcraft evolves the exploration of themes established in the most recent iteration. Here, the design explores and plays with themes of materiality, color, and texture and the contrast between new and old.   The infill building, modified at various times during its existence, features concrete walls and floors and a tongue-and-groove Douglas fir ceiling, all of which were cleaned and le... Rougemarin Doma

During last spring’s quarantine when all the restaurants were closed, we started talking with the team at Rougemarin about the future of the catering industry, and about the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on people’s habit of going out to restaurants in general. Prolonged lockdowns have made cooking popular again, and people have started approaching home-cooked meals quite seriously. Why leave professional cooking only to restaurant chefs when with a little help you can become a chef yourself in your own kitchen? We have thus come up with the concept of Rougemarin Doma (Rougemarin at Home), a store that is based on quality ingredients at different stages of meal processing and preparation. From completely raw foods such as f... More

Luneurs ~ Les Halles

To design a new French market offering for Luneurs - Les Halles, hcreates interiors developed an eclectic approach in materiality, by planning and styling with a distinct separation of bakery, coffee, ice cream, and delicatessen. hcreates played with a larger industrial approach to scale, utilizing large light/ acoustic features and exposing services and fire hoses to emphasize a more raw sense of space, whilst retaining the warm, inviting aesthetic of the other well-loved Luneurs locations. Street Lofts

Authentic experience has become an important value to urban travellers. Individual impression instead of mainstream sightseeing is what motivates modern tourists today to explore major cities. A new hotel concept now offers the infrastructure for trips off the beaten track. The idea is simple and convincing. Due to its proximity to the city life Vienna’s ground floor zone symbolises an area of unique urban character. At the same time massive vacancies of city shops urge for their revitalisation. URBANAUTS bridges both aspects using vacant boutiques as authentic habitat for travellers. Former shops become central hotel rooms – URBANAUTS Street Lofts.  The concept is unique. Hotel is no longer regarded in terms of a self-su... More

In the crooked streets of Vienna's historic first district, there lies a hidden gem for cocktail enthusiasts. Situated on the ground floor of a former clergy house from the late 1700s, the interior concept of Truth & Dare resembles the owners’ vision to create a pure and raw space, celebrating high-class mixology and bar culture. The opposing mix of materials and a complementary color concept, which challenges your visual sense, creates two areas each with its very own atmosphere. A monolithic counter clad with stone and black steel dominates the bar area, immersed into an overall cold and dark color palette. Following the ancient walls behind the bar, an unpretentious straight steel shelve displays the gustatory specialities. The... More

Adaptive Reuse: Repurposing Silos

In the 1850s, Chicago was considered the grain capital of the world. The mill and silo buildings, located primarily within the Fulton Market neighborhoods, are a direct reflection of Chicago’s wheat industry heritage, one of the major industries upon which the city was built. In recent years, as Fulton Market has become more trendy with the opening of new bars, restaurants, residences and offices, many of the protected historic buildings have been renovated. Unprotected historic buildings beyond the district boundaries, however, are routinely threatened with demolition. One such example was a 250,000-square-foot mill factory, which spanned a 2.2-acre site and included a series of brick loft buildings ranging from three to six stories... More

The fascinating Botaniq Castle in Tura, Pest County, Hungary has been returned to its former glory after a restoration that involved transforming the entire building from an erstwhile aristocratic residence into a modern luxury hotel. The restoration included a new lighting design for the exteriors, carried out by 3F Project. L&L’s lighting fixtures were used in different areas in the structure, starting with the main entrance, where customers are greeted by an imposing arched entrance. It is flanked by a tall, cylindrical tower with a series of rectangular windows along its whole height. On the sills of each window in the entrance and the tower, and on those of the arched dormer windows, 3000K, 7W Lyss 1.0 projectors were instal... More
