Swedish studio Fredblad Arkitekter has designed a collection of ten timber cabins for Halmstad Golfarena in the coastal city of Halmstad, Sweden. Arranged around a pond, the cabins are shaped by a sleek, pared-back architectural expression and are adapted with careful consideration for the surrounding natural features and topography. The cabins are powered by Halmstad Golfarena’s nearby solar installation, which supplies electricity to the wider facility and course vehicles.
Background
Completed in spring 2023, the cabins continue Fredblad Arkitekter’s ongoing work at Halmstad Golfarena, where previous commissions have included the clubhouse, training hall, driving range, and rental cottages. Material choices were guided in part by the client’s request for robust, low-maintenance buildings to reduce ongoing upkeep across both the cabins and the landscape.
Materials and exterior design
The cabins use simple, everyday materials. Each 45-square-metre cabin has a three-dimensionally panelled timber facade and was assembled on-site. The exterior uses Bitus Linax pine cladding, treated by boiling in linseed oil for long-term durability. The timber facades are intended to age over time and develop a natural, weathered patina.
Terraces and landscape connection
Each of the ten cabins includes a generous private terrace, some of which project slightly over the water. The west-facing position allows the cabins to benefit from sunlight and views of the surrounding greenery. Dense wooden panels visually anchor the terraces into the facades.
The roofs are covered with a bed of various sedum plants, designed to provide balance and connection with the surrounding environment.
Interior concept
Designed for short stays, the compact layout of each cabin includes two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a combined living, dining, and kitchen area. The 45-square-metre floor plans were deliberately refined to be efficient and no larger than required for the intended use. Large glazing maximises natural light and leads outwards to the central terrace.
A light ochre entrance door introduces contrast and warmth. The interiors are themed around “ocean” and “grass”, with blue and green shades set against dark tones of black and anthracite, complemented by oak flooring. Care has been taken in selecting the furnishings and decor.
