Gusto 101, located in Toronto’s trendy Fashion District, was transformed from an abandoned, industrial auto body shop into fashionable Trattoria. OpenAire was approached to build a retractable roof for the stylish patio on the top of the old building. The owners wanted to create a patio with a retractable enclosure that opens up widely in warm weather and fully closes in winter. They needed a solution that would allow second floor seating rain or shine, year round.
OpenAire designed a double slope, telescoping skylight measuring 32′-10″x 51′-0″. It features an offset ridge with two upper gable ends. The roof has three divided sections, where two sections retract under one fixed section. The south wall consists of an 11′-6″x 51′-0″ sliding and stacking window system above railing height fixed glass. The east gable end measures 23′-4″x 12′-5″ features a bi-folding window system above railing height fixed glass.
In warm weather, Gusto 101 restaurant diners can enjoy their meals in the breeze and sunshine with the patio roof retracted and patio walls fully open. During winter months with the roof closed, guests can enjoy a cozy rooftop space, dining under the stars.
