What is luxury?
How small and simple can a house be while still fulfilling the fundamental need for comfort and well-being? Rather than size or elaborate building technology, the focus of this design lies on spatial quality, a close relationship to nature, and clarity in everyday use. The house is conceived as an attempt to understand simplicity itself as a form of luxury.

Situated near the small village of Seddin in Brandenburg, this compact home for a couple combines a sensitive approach to the rural surroundings with the desire for a contemporary retreat in nature. With only 58 square meters of living space, it provides room for two people without compromising on spatial quality or comfort. The simple square floor plan and the red-stained larch cladding give the building a warm, understated presence that blends harmoniously into the landscape and its neighbourhood.

Inside, polished concrete floors, white walls, light green linoleum, and spruce ceilings create a calm setting for a life close to nature. At the heart of the home lies a flexible living space that serves both as an everyday gathering place and as an atelier-like retreat. Around it, four smaller rooms – bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and storage – pinwheel outward, organizing the house with clarity while framing carefully composed views of the garden. A small open sleeping loft provides additional space for visits from the couple’s children.

The energy concept follows a deliberate low-tech approach: heating is provided solely by a small wood stove, and hot water is generated by an electric instant heater powered by a mobile photovoltaic unit in the garden. Full-height sliding shutters filter sunlight and offer privacy when desired.
