The development of the Granary Island in Gdansk involves one of the most attractive building sites in Poland. Here it was necessary to redesign the entire tip of the island with due consideration of the old city structure that had been destroyed during the war. The basic idea of the overall concept developed by RKW Architektur + was a marked additional densification of the buildings, which had already been placed in a compact arrangement at that time. The new buildings – such as the newly opened Holiday Inn Gdansk City Center – have a geometrically linear and minimalist design contrasting with the small-scale, playful old town.
