ROBERT MAIER ARCHITEKTEN as Architects

URBAN DEVELOPMENT
The building site is situated on the outskirts of an postwar settlement with its typical very deep plots. The client was able to buy the western part of such a plot through its splitting. When starting to plan there was just one public opening from the south east direction. But there were plannings to built a new street on the westside of the plot so we decided with the client to situate the entrance and garage towards this new street.

ARCHITECTURE
The building is situated on the plot divided into three functional areas. On the western Part the Garage- and ancillary used areas are placed, the Living areas on the eastern part of the plot. With the sheltered vestibule the two areas form together with the Garden area an atrium with sojourn quality. The pathway to the entrance goes along the northern property line.

With its typical pitched roof and the flat outbuildings the house  unobtrusivlyinsertes itself into the surrounding post war settlement. The garage segregates the plot to the public street and developes with the main building a private garden inbetween. This is a contemporary interpretation of the for the region typical courtyard building arrangemants.

The facade is clad into rough cut, untreated larch fillets which is also typical for the rural bavarian buildings. Within this facade openings are arranged in a strong grid which shifts every storey by the width of the opening. The cladding of the facade also overlays the big glazingsiof the ground floor with a bigger gap to generate the best possible transparency and also protection of vews from the outside.

BUILDING STRUCTURE
The construction is built on a concrete baseplate with concrete upstands. The exterior walls are constructed as wood frame construction with an additional installation layer and gypsum board cladding on the inside. The outside is clad into larch boards as mentioned earlier. The interior walls are also constructed as wood frame constructions closed with gypsum board.

Wooden beam ceiling with screed and parquet or poly urethan coating as flooring were used the theseperation of the storeys. The pitched roof is constructed as typical roof framework with an aluminium cladding.

INTERIOR

Visitors enter the house over a hallway also used as cloakroom. In this hallway there is also the entrance from the garage and the stairway to the upper floor. From this corridor you arrive in the kitchen and dining area which is seperated from the living room with a furniture block. As seperation to the hallway and as multifunctional backbone of the common areas a big continous cabinet was built.

The rooms are planned efficiently and clearly noticable. The bright flooring and ceiling allow the light to get deep into the building. The ceiling high cabinets which seperate the rooms and give the necessary storage space are clad in birch plywood.

BUILDING SERVICES
The heating of the building is made possible by a special ice-storage heating with solar retrieval. In the warm summermonths this special ice- storage is used to cool the building. Another energy optimization is possible through a controlled ventilation with heat recovery. The whole building services combined with the photovoltaik modules on the roof allow to achieve a nearly Energy self sustaining building.

Material Used :
1.  Garage-Roof: Sarnafil
2.  House-Roof: Haushaut
3.  Facade Cladding: Mayrhofer
4.  Kitchen-Worktops: corian, white
