House of Stillness

Making scale feel intimate

House of Stillness was conceived as a contemporary family home where generous proportions never compromise comfort. The design explores how architecture, materiality and integrated technology can transform a large residence into a place that feels calm, warm and deeply personal.

Developed in close collaboration with the architect, the house is defined by expressive sloping walls and angled rooflines that create a powerful spatial identity. Rather than softening these architectural gestures, the interior embraces them, using carefully selected materials, acoustic solutions and human-scaled detailing to create a welcoming atmosphere.

The heart of the home is the open-plan living area, organised around a sculptural fireplace. Positioned between the kitchen and lounge, it subtly defines each space while maintaining visual openness. Its softly rounded form introduces warmth and intimacy, becoming a natural gathering point for everyday family life.

Acoustic comfort played a crucial role in the design. The angled ceilings are finished with bespoke timber slats mounted on acoustic backing, reducing reverberation while enriching the interior with texture and warmth. This careful integration of performance and materiality allows the generous volumes to remain comfortable and inviting.

Material contrasts reinforce the architectural composition. The fireplace combines refined detailing with a hand-carved base of solid natural stone, intentionally left rough to celebrate craftsmanship and provide a tactile counterpoint to the clean lines of the interior.

Sustainability and comfort are equally integrated into the architecture. A ground-source air tempering system uses the stable temperature of the earth to pre-condition fresh air throughout the seasons, reducing energy demand while maintaining a healthy indoor climate. Technology remains almost entirely invisible, allowing the architecture to take centre stage.
