IDW – In der Wiesen: Urban Gardening

Josef Weichenberger Architects as Architects

"In der Wiesen" – an apartment building located in Wien-Liesing, on the southern outskirts of Vienna – provides its inhabitants with remarkable recreational value. It is characterized by affordable rents, excellent public transport connections, high-quality outdoor spaces – both private and public – as well as an array of attractive common areas. Urban Gardening features as the leitmotif of the project, with common gardens and terraces serving as the green centrepiece of the building. Furthermore a swimming pool, gym, seminar room, children’s play room, laundromat and a bicycle workshop underpin the concept.

There is a communicative side of "In der Wiesen", with social areas, like the main entrance atrium, a meeting space, a shared-flat for the elderly, and a more private side with open spaces, childrens playground and the swimming pool.

The project offers apartment types for a wide range of ways of life, and ways of living. Each individual apartment allows for variations, and comes with an associated outdoor space for urban gardening and relaxation. A multi-storey entrance atrium and a roof terrace on the 4th floor interconnect with the adjacent building to the south. On the outside, polygonal balconies undulate along the facade, while oscillating between rough and smooth front surfaces, and create a wave-like pattern that characterizes the buildings prominent appearance. At its ends, stacks of volumetric setbacks and protrusions generate an "almost sculptural form" (Architekturjournal Wettbewerbe, Ausg. 344, 3/2019).
