The two canal house in the city centre of Amsterdam were designed as identical twin houses in 1642 but were separated after completion and different use and owners left their traces. After three and a half centuries the IAS reunites the two buildings.
The lack of a coherent historical style in the building was turned into an opportunity by treating it as a collection of 'period rooms'. Precisely through the new cross-fertilisation between the different styles, users and atmospheres, the IAS has acquired its own identity that matches its interdisciplinary research program of the institute.
