J.G. Whittier Apartments is a new 4-story, 54-unit mixed-use development on the edge of Seattle's vibrant Ballard neighborhood. Inspired by the geology and climate of eastern Washington, this new residential community’s architecture and interior design celebrates geometric anomalies found in nature. The mixed-use building features high-quality, earthy materials such as stained wood sliding, cedar-clad entry portals, and pre-weathered steel planters.
Offering market rate housing in a range of unit types, from studio apartments to two-bedroom layouts, J.G. Whittier is a testament to the harmonious integration of nature-inspired design, community-focused development, and sustainable practices.
Building amenities include gathering rooms, coworking spaces, bicycle storage and repair facilities, a pet/bike wash, and an incredible, expansive fully landscaped rooftop deck with an outdoor kitchen and pet play area. The extensive roof garden takes advantage of 360-degree stunning views, including the Olympic Mountains and Mount Rainier, designed by Karen Kiest Landscape Architecture.
J.G. Whittier fosters a vibrant and inclusive community, and the whimsical lobby decor will evolve over time with its curious space of odds & ends intended to expand and change with the community. The building also includes two retail spaces, slated to become a fitness studio and coffee shop, which will serve as convenient amenity extensions for residents. On the facades where walls with no openings are required by code, stunning murals by Artist Chelsea Wirtz pay homage to the region's heritage and connect with the neighborhood.
The architecture and interior design services were both performed by Johnston Architects, providing a fluid understanding of the clients’ vision and ensuring materiality was cohesive and complementary, inside and out.\
