K&C House is one of a pair built around 1910. The Sly Brothers were local boys with an aspiration to help, from the adjoining cottages in Manly they walked down the laneway to the beach, boarded boats and set out to the surf purely to save lives. Without knowing it they started a wave and Surf life Saving Australia was born. As Manly has evolved in the years since, it has adapted to a new way of life and so it was time for the cottage that the Sly Brothers once called home to evolve, to be flexible and to adapt to Manly’s modern lifestyle.
The owner, an ex-pat living in Vienna sought to create a well-designed, quality end product that captured and contrasted the embedded Manly history with a European lifestyle. Restored Kauri timber sits adjacent Viennese oak, slim hallways open up to spacious receiving rooms & heritage character contrasts to minimal.
“Walk in and look up” was the intention, this concept was pushed through the strategic placement of courtyards, skylights, a glass walkway and large expanses of double glazing all working in harmony to flood the semi with natural, even light, breeze and constant connection to landscape. With external operable shading systems, insulated hydronic underfloor heating and a gas fire, this house is designed to be opened up in an Australian summer or sealed in cooler months recreating a cosy European home in winter.
Original linings were restored on site, timber floors were reclaimed and crafted into custom vanities, original sandstock bricks became new exposed internal walls and landscape features, doors uncovered behind linings were restored and reused.
