Expandable Tiny Architecture for Urban Living

In Lorient, the demand for short-term accommodation linked to universities, internships, and seasonal activities continues to grow, while affordable housing remains limited. Kinetic Cube proposes a compact and adaptable tiny-housing unit responding to this temporary urban condition. The project explores a lightweight architectural system that can be temporarily installed within public landscapes such as Jules Ferry Park, while maintaining architectural quality and spatial dignity.

The dwelling begins as 4×4×4 CBM cube, clear and stable geometric form organizing all essential domestic functions within an efficient 16 SQM core. The project fundamental idea is its kinetic expandable system. Through a sliding mechanism, the cube extends outward by 2 meters, generating additional 8 SQM adaptive space. This movement transforms the compact volume into a flexible living environment that adjusts to changing daily activities.

Within this expandable zone, ceiling-integrated retractable furniture allows interior to transform between free space, dining area, workspace, or living room. A retractable entrance bridge secures the unit when closed, while folding ladders provide access to roof terrace and technical storage above.

Lightweight, modular, and deployable, Kinetic Cube explores how minimal architectural object can quietly support the temporary rhythms of urban life.

Sometimes smallest architecture can create largest urban impact.

Self-Sufficient Systems and Environmental Strategy 

Kinetic Cube is conceived as a compact self-sufficient micro-dwelling, where environmental performance is integrated directly into the architectural system. 

Roof-mounted photovoltaic panels generate electricity to power essential equipment such as LED lighting and small appliances. 

Rainwater is collected through roof channels and stored in integrated tanks for domestic reuse.

Thermal comfort is ensured through insulated floor and roof assemblies combined with natural cross-ventilation through controlled openings. 

The compact envelope reduces energy demand while maintaining comfortable interior conditions. 

These passive and active strategies allow the unit to operate independently, making it suitable for temporary installation in public landscapes with minimal infrastructure.

Materials, Structure, and Technical Assembly 

Kinetic Cube is designed as a lightweight modular structure that allows rapid installation and minimal impact on site. 

A compact steel frame supports an elevated wooden platform, slightly lifting the unit above the ground while preserving the landscape. 

The primary cube is enclosed with translucent polycarbonate panels that allow soft daylight to enter while maintaining privacy. 

The expandable volume is clad with light timber panels, creating a warm and tactile contrast. 

Mechanical equipment, batteries, water tanks, and retractable furniture mechanisms are integrated within a compact technical zone above the main space. 

This modular system allows the unit to be assembled, disassembled, and relocated with efficiency.
