A special animal collection deserves a building with an equally thoughtful material identity. For LimburgHUIS at GaiaZOO, the starting point was clear: the use of natural materials and a design approach with minimal environmental impact.
Located within the green surroundings of the zoo, the building combines local character with a strong architectural expression. The base is constructed from Kunraderstone, a natural stone from the province of Limburg. Above this grounded foundation, Zwarthout | Shou Sugi Ban was used to create a dark, tactile and distinctive upper volume.
For the main façade, Naoshima by Zwarthout | Shou Sugi Ban was selected. The charred wood gives the building a powerful black appearance, while the natural texture of the timber adds depth and character. The door was finished in Marugame, creating a refined detail within the same material language.
The contrast between the pale, rough stone base and the dark charred wood creates a clear architectural composition. The stone anchors the building in its local context, while the black wooden volume blends naturally with the surrounding trees and landscape. Together, the materials create a building that feels robust, natural and connected to its environment.
In this project, Shou Sugi Ban is used not only for its visual strength, but also for the atmosphere it brings. The charred surface has a raw, organic quality that fits beautifully within the setting of GaiaZOO. It gives the building a sense of craftsmanship and authenticity, while creating a memorable identity for LimburgHUIS.
For architects, this project shows how charred wood can be applied beyond residential architecture. In a public and nature-focused environment, Naoshima and Marugame add texture, contrast and a strong material presence without overpowering the landscape.
With LimburgHUIS, Zwarthout | Shou Sugi Ban demonstrates how natural materials can be brought together in a clear and expressive architectural language. A building where local stone, charred wood and careful detailing create a fitting home for a special animal collection.
