Set in the wooded surroundings of Hollandsche Rading in the Dutch province of Utrecht, Black Gemstone was designed by MONK Architecten BNA as a dark, folded volume among the trees. The facades and roof planes flow visually into one another, giving the house the character of a black gemstone.
Behind this form is a sustainability strategy centered on extensive timber construction, reduced energy demand, renewable energy generation, and durable materials that can be maintained selectively.
Sustainability is integrated into the design rather than treated as a separate technical addition. The structure, building envelope, interior, and building services were approached as a single system, with each layer contributing to reduced material and energy use over the building’s lifetime.
Timber construction as the foundation
Above its concrete foundations and basement, the house is constructed predominantly from timber. Prefabricated timber-frame elements form the building envelope, alongside timber structural components and interior finishes. Manufactured off-site and assembled as a kit of parts, the system improves construction precision, reduces material waste, and streamlines assembly.
Timber continues throughout the interior, where untreated Fraké window frames and exposed columns are paired with Douglas fir finishes. Leaving these materials untreated highlights their natural grain and texture while reducing the need for additional coatings.
A durable, high-performance envelope
The folded roof and facades are clad in Marugame by Zwarthout | Shou Sugi Ban, a charred Accoya® timber that creates a continuous black exterior. Produced through a controlled interpretation of the traditional Japanese wood-charring technique, the process forms a protective carbon layer that gives the timber its textured finish while enhancing durability.
The Accoya® substrate provides dimensional stability and resistance to weathering, allowing the facade to require minimal maintenance over a long service life.
The boards are mechanically screwed rather than bonded, enabling individual elements to be removed, repaired, or replaced without disturbing the surrounding cladding. This reversible assembly also supports the future reuse of facade components, extending the material's lifespan beyond the building itself.
Passive design strategies support year-round comfort. External shutters and solar shading limit unwanted solar gain during warmer months, while operable windows and rooflights enable natural night ventilation, allowing accumulated heat to dissipate without relying solely on mechanical cooling.
Efficient building services
The remaining energy demand is met by an air-to-water heat pump that supplies both space heating and domestic hot water. Low-temperature underfloor heating serves all levels of the home and can also provide cooling during summer. Ventilation combines natural air supply with mechanical extract, controlled by CO2 sensors in the primary living spaces to provide fresh air where required.
Material performance and longevity
Alongside energy performance, the environmental impact of the building materials was evaluated using the Dutch Environmental Performance of Buildings methodology, known as MPG. Black Gemstone achieved an MPG score of €0.62 per square meter of gross floor area per year, demonstrating compliance with national environmental performance requirements.
The extensive use of renewable timber, combined with prefabricated construction, durable charred cladding, and mechanically fixed facade components, reduces resource consumption while supporting long-term maintenance and future adaptability. The result is a timber home in which sculptural form, low operational energy demand, and material longevity reinforce one another, demonstrating how biobased architecture can achieve both environmental performance and enduring architectural character.
