VALI continues to perfect its cost-effective green building techniques in its second home utilizinginsulation and passive house designto keep this home beyond energy efficient – allowing it to create more energy than it consumes. The east and west exposure of the home is limitedwhile a stylish 4-foot overhang shades the southern exposure. Biomimicry one-inch thick custom steel siding surrounds the home, keeping direct sun exposure off the walls. EPS insulation along the edges of the slab allows the shaded ground underneath to act as a heat sink for hot days, cooling the home naturally. The cellulose insulation in the 12-inch thick walls adds to the airtight shellto reduce energy use by up to 90% compared to other homes.Air quality is improved by a 24-hour HRV“lung” system that pulls stale air from the kitchen and bathroom, where moisture tends to accumulate, and swaps it with fresh, preconditioned air from outside that has been filtered through the system. This works to keep the home comfortable 75% of the year without any added heating or cooling.
