The new concourse and piazza create a dynamic addition to London Bridge Quarter.
As Europe’s tallest building, The Shard has dramatically changed London’s skyline. A crucial part of the scheme centred around creating efficient connectivity to the adjacent London Bridge railway station. A collaboration between Pascall+Watson and Renzo Piano Building Workshop was established to address this issue.
The development introduces a station approach via a generous tree-lined piazza accommodating a bus station, passenger set-down areas and taxi zones. A highly transparent structure enclosing the piazza visually connects The Shard and the station, neatly resolving the interface between them by echoing the language of the skyscraper.
Built on the station’s original arches, the new passenger concourse is an open and elegant space featuring one of Europe’s longest passenger processing barriers, a configuration that enables a vastly increased throughput.
The project was successfully constructed within a live operational environment, forming the first phase of the station’s subsequent redevelopment.
