Lyon Street

The 1952 residence at 2201 Lyon residence was originally designed by John Savage Bolles, and is an excellent example of a reinforced concrete home designed in a mid-century modernist style by Bolles for himself and his family. Bolles was a prominent San Francisco architect, and is best know for the design of CandlestickPark, built in 1958. The original Victorian house on this site, 3100 Jackson, designed by J. Cather Newsom in1892, had burned down a year later, to be replaced in 1898 by a second one, designed by Samuel Newsom and Frederick Meyer.

This house was demolished circa 1940 and the lot sat vacant until Bolles began construction of the current house. Bolles bought the 34' x 127' parcel on the northwest corner of Jackson and Lyon, and perhaps mindful that two previous wood-frame houses on the lot hadnot survived, Bolles designed this one to last and to require little maintenance. It is a fine example ofBay Region Modernism, with wood beam ceilings and a mural on the west wall of the dining area thathas a spectacular San Francisco City scape painted by artist Jose Moya del Pino with whom Bolles had collaborated on the murals for the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition. Treasure Island, the Bay Bridge, Alcatraz, the Ferry Building, Coit Tower and the Golden Gate Bridge are just a few of the SanFrancisco landmarks easily identifiable in the mural.

After their children grew up, the Bolles' sold the house in 1973 and moved to Nob Hill. The third family to own the house hired Diego Pacheco Design Practice to update the home in 2014. The historic mid-century residence was reorganized around a new open stair, creating the hub for an active 21st-century family. The stair is capped by an operable skylight which cools the home naturally. The Jose Moya del Pino mural was restored and the original spirit of the house was preserved while updating the antiquated kitchen and bathrooms and adding modern amenities such as radiant heating and LED lighting and state-of-the-art audio/visual systems.. The newly-designed backyard is now a roof garden above a completely-concealed underground addition housing a Wet Bar and Wine Room and a Great Room for entertaining.
